Deforestation , clearance , clearcutting , or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees from land that is then converted to non-forest use. The most concentrated deforestation occurs in tropical rainforests. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations defines deforestation as the conversion of forest to other land uses regardless of whether it is human-induced. Net change, therefore, can be positive or negative, depending on whether gains exceed losses, or vice versa. The removal of trees without sufficient reforestation has resulted in habitat damage , biodiversity loss , and aridity. Deforestation causes extinction , changes to climatic conditions, desertification , and displacement of populations, as observed by current conditions and in the past through the fossil record.

Human impact on the environment or anthropogenic impact on the environment includes changes to biophysical environments and to ecosystems , biodiversity , and natural resources caused directly or indirectly by humans, including global warming , environmental degradation such as ocean acidification , mass extinction and biodiversity loss , ecological crisis , and ecological collapse. Modifying the environment to fit the needs of society is causing severe effects. Some of the problems, including global warming and biodiversity loss pose an existential risk to the human race, and some experts attribute this crisis to overall human overpopulation. The term anthropogenic designates an effect or object resulting from human activity.
